Name of the project:
Young Peoples Concert Preview – Nature in Music

Project Description:
Present an educational and informative preview of the upcoming Young Peoples Concert to the target audience planning to attend the concert. The goals of each program are:
• Provide insight into the music to be performed
• Present the music in context with other interdisciplinary material, such as history, culture, language arts, and social studies.
• Engage the target audience of young people.
• Present acceptable concert behavior.
• Present the Young Peoples’ Concert Series to classroom teachers in an aspect favorable to continued participation and ticket sales by the schools.
The series has been ongoing for many years, however, for this program, we used technology in an entirely new way. The program was delivered on a PowerPoint presentation, incorporating stunning visuals, animation, sound clips and transitions. This eliminated the need for the docents to carry posters, overhead projectors, poster stands and other heavy equipment formerly used for the presentation.

Role and number of volunteers involved:
During the initial script-writing process, four docent volunteers participate over an extended three-day work session, designed to produce three basic scripts to be used during the year. Once that is completed, the two committee chairpersons work together to fashion the script into a PowerPoint presentation. In this capacity, we add the graphics, determine the excerpts to be used and finalize the presentation.

During all of this process, the work of the committee is reviewed by Volunteer Association officers, other docents and the Chairperson of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Education Committee. During the 2007-08 academic year, 25 docents presented programs in 165 separate classroom sessions, at 105 schools with 10,616 students.
